However, the FDA and EFSA have not authorized health claims made for Probiotics due to a lack of clear correlation between probiotic metabolism and beneficial effects.

Lactobacillus reuteri is a species of probiotic bacteria that has garnered significant attention in both the scientific community and among consumers for its potential health benefits. Known for its presence in various parts of the human body such as the gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, and breast milk, L. reuteri is marketed under several trade names, including BioGaia and Reuterina. This probiotic has been the focus of extensive research conducted by institutions around the globe, aiming to explore its various therapeutic applications. It is categorized as a dietary supplement rather than a drug, although it is often used in a medicinal context to treat or prevent a range of conditions.

Numerous studies have investigated the indications for L. reuteri, including its use in managing gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and colic in infants, as well as its potential role in oral health, immune function, and even mental health. Current research is particularly interested in its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to modulate the gut microbiome. While the progress in this area of research is promising, it's important to note that more large-scale, randomized controlled trials are needed to fully understand the scope of L. reuteri’s benefits and limitations.

Dosing

The recommended dose of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) depends on your age and condition, and it's best to consult a healthcare provider for advice:

  • Adults

The typical dose is 200 million to 50 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) per day, taken by mouth, for up to six months.

  • Children

The typical dose is 100 million to 20 billion CFUs per day, taken by mouth, for up to six months.

L. reuteri is generally considered safe to consume, even for people with compromised immune systems. When taking L. reuteri, you should follow the directions on the product package, including whether to swallow it whole, chew it, or mix it with liquid or food. If you're taking the liquid form, use a measuring device or spoon to ensure you're getting the correct dose.

L. reuteri is a probiotic that can help with intestinal microflora and bile salt hydrolase production. It can also be used in food, such as sourdough fermentation, fruit juice fermentation, and yogurt.
