Akkermansia Muciniphila is a Gram-negative, non-motile, anaerobe that is a mucus-layer-degrading member of the human and murine gut microbiota. It was first discovered in 2004 by Derrien and De Vos at Wageningen University (The Netherlands) and was isolated from healthy human feces. A. muciniphila colonizes a large portion of the human population, beginning in early childhood and reaching an estimated average density of approximately 3% of normal flora by adulthood. It has emerged as a beneficial microbe for its hosts.
